The Weekend Solved
Some weekends just mean more. This is one of them — and we found three ways to make sure the women in your life feel exactly that.
Option 1 — A Garden Morning at The Flower Farm
For a Mother's Day that feels a world away, the Flower Farm in Loomis — offers a garden-to-table experience surrounded by citrus groves and a working nursery. The atmosphere is unhurried, with the kind of setting that makes meaningful conversation easy.

Option 2 — Rail bikes on a 120-Year-Old Gold Rush Railroad
Rail Explorers runs pedal-powered rail bikes on the Amador Central Railroad, originally built in 1904 — a route that once carried gold ore, copper, clay, and timber through the foothills. Today it carries you, at a leisurely pace, through rolling golden hills. The electric assist means you're never actually working hard.

Option 3 — A Lake That Nobody from the Corridor Seems to Know About
Lake Tabeaud sits just outside Jackson in the pine-and-oak hills of Amador County, and it has the particular quality of feeling like a local secret. The loop trail circles the lake in about 2.3 miles — easy, mostly flat, with picnic areas scattered around the shoreline and restrooms at the trailhead. No motorboats, no overnight camping, open year-round.

Local Spotlight — Belly Barbecue, Folsom
You smell Belly Barbecue before you see it. People regularly line up outside the restaurant in Folsom Corners shopping center for next-level brisket, hefty beef ribs and more. Yelp
Belly Barbecue brings together Texas-style BBQ and Georgia soul food, with a menu built around brisket, beef short ribs, pork ribs, pulled pork, smoked turkey, collard greens, mac and cheese, baked beans, cornbread muffins, and sweet potato pie — all made from scratch, all smoked low and slow on offset pits.
They're open Friday through Sunday, lunch only — and they close when they sell out. Which means the window is real and the regulars know it.

Get Outside: The Hidden Serpentine Vista
While most hikers crowd the Salmon Falls bridge area, the Red Hills (accessed via the Falcon Crest/Monte Vista trailhead) offer a more sophisticated, serene experience. This area is unique because of its rare serpentine soil, which produces specialized wildflowers and "ghost pines" that you won’t find elsewhere in the foothills.
The Insider Move: To avoid the $10 State Park fee and the heavy bridge traffic, park in the Falcon Crest gravel lot. Located on the left side of Salmon Falls Road (about 3 miles past the Green Valley intersection). Free parking and the trailhead starts right at the edge of the lot.

Worth the Drive: The Soul of the Farmhouse
Hillenbrand Farmhaus Brewery
There is a specific feeling that comes with turning off the main road and onto the winding path that leads to Hillenbrand. It isn’t just a brewery; it is a 13-acre working farm that invites you to slow down and breathe the Sierra foothill air. While many places try to replicate the "farmhouse" vibe, this is the real thing—a hand-built wooden barn surrounded by sprawling oak trees, haystacks, and a roaming barnyard of donkeys, horses, and goats.
Location: 5100 Virginiatown Rd, Newcastle, CA
