Get Outside: The Granite Majesty of Horsetail Falls

If you’ve driven toward Tahoe and marveled at the massive white ribbons of water cascading down the granite cliffs at Twin Bridges, it’s time to finally pull over. Horsetail Falls is in its full, thunderous glory as the spring snowmelt from Desolation Wilderness pours over the 500-foot face of Pyramid Creek. Quite simply, the most dramatic view on the entire corridor.

The Local Guide: How to Get There

Head east on Highway 50 past Strawberry. Just as the road begins its steep climb toward Echo Summit, look for the Pyramid Creek Trailhead parking lot on your left. It is a popular spot, so aim for an early arrival to snag one for $10.

The Route to the View

The hike is a 3.3-mile round trip to reach the base of the falls.

The Starting Line: From the parking lot, follow the Pyramid Creek Trail. The first half-mile is a gentle, well-marked path through a mix of manzanita and cedar.

The Wilderness Marker: You will soon reach a self-registration kiosk for the Desolation Wilderness. Even if you’re just day-hiking, you’ll need to fill out a free permit.

The Scenic Sweet Spot: Stay to the left as you approach the creek. The trail eventually transitions from dirt to large, flat granite slabs. Follow the rock cairns (small stacks of stones) that lead you upstream. You don't need to go all the way to the top of the falls to win; the most scenic vantage point is the "base" plateau about 1.5 miles in.

From here, the falls loom directly over you, offer a front-row seat to the mist and the raw power of the Sierras.

Around the Corridor

Local Butcher Expansion: Beloved Kings Meats in Diamond Springs is making its move into EDH Town Center. High-end butcher and market with local pies, seafood, and beer/wine.

Estelle Bakery & Patisserie: The popular Sacramento-born French bakery is expanding into Folsom with a new storefront on Iron Point Road.

Tastes of Town Center: Mark your calendars for next Saturday, May 23rd, the return of this community favorite in EDH. Sample small bites and drinks from local restaurants while enjoying the Botanical Brushstrokes art exhibit.
